Your Instructor

Mary Courtney, M.Ed., M.A., has a life-long history in publishing and the written arts, as well as in training others in writing, editing, and teaching. Before she got her start in book, periodical, and Web editing, Mary had worked in reporting, layout, and editing for student publications; in government manual publishing; and in grant proposal writing. Now her writing and editing is focused on fiction, scripts, and education materials.

Mary earned a master of education degree from The Center for International Education at The University of Massachusetts at Amherst and later earned a master of arts in English from the Southern Methodist University Creative Writing Program.

A firm believer that experience will help you later on, Mary worked herself through SMU by checking ads for compliance with clients' register marks, trademarks, and permissions, as well as content instructions and legally mandated disclaimers. This might have been baffling had she not done law research as a student trial attorney in state competition. As copyright law seems to be ever-changing--and expanding into the Web domain--the journey continues!

Mary has been involved in training activities since her teens. Most recently, Mary served on the nationwide Art Institute committee which hosted an audio conference on the legal aspects of accommodating students with learning disabilities.
